Best Burger in NYC?

Posted: April 1, 2011 in Food / Dining

The question posed in this post has been on New Yorker’s minds since the days of  New Amsterdam.  While there will always be great debate of the city’s best burger, I have narrowed the list down to 3.  While subjective, my list showcases 3 of the better burgers within the city limits.  While the top 3 may be open to debate, it seems as if most New Yorkers do have these establishments somewhere within their top ten…
1. Prime Burger
5 East 51st Street
New York, NY 10022
(212) 759-4730

Prime Burger has found fame in New York for two very distinct reasons.  One, they have kept the 60’s Diner alive even in an era of technology and evolution.  Second and most importantly, Prime Burger only uses Grade A Prime Beef.  Not exactly your ordinary burger! As for the menu it’s all burgers, classic sandwiches, and a few fried dishes, like chicken-in-a-basket. Most of the fare is ordinary, but the honest, handcrafted burgers have been keeping people coming back, literally, for generations. The modestly sized quarter-pounders are made from freshly ground lean chuck; they’re moist and tasty but do not require a three-napkin cleanup job. The fries are hot and crisp, but the French-fried onions (not rings) are superior. It’s the cracker-meal dusting prior to frying that makes them unusually crunchy. Situated across the street from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Primeburger gets especially crowded during the holidays.  Stop by and enjoy a burger if your in the area.

2.  Peter Luger
178 Broadway
Brooklyn, NY 11211
(718) 387-7400
What is there not to love about Peter Luger’s steakhouse? Arguably the best in steakhouse in town also makes a serious burger, naturally. However, it is only available at lunch. It’s over a half a pound of delicious meat – what elsewould you expect from such a lauded institution?  Burger-lovers will hear the call of the Luger’s burger and sample it to their great delight. It crumbles into a medium-rare mass of meat.   Always a must have for any New York burger lover.

3.  Five Napkin Burger
Locations in Manhattan and Queens
Yet another citywide favorite, here is the simplest way to understand the 5 Napkin Burger: onion soup. Imagine, if you will, a bowl of the piping hot concoction. Now, retain the flavor, but swap out everything beneath the gooey cheese and replace it with fresh ground chuck. Voila – that is essentially the 5 Napkin Burger. It is dripping with juice (hence a “five napkin burger”) and slathered with melting gruyere cheese, onions and rosemary aioli. It started out as an item on the menu of Nice Matin, an Upper West Side restaurant, but proved so popular the owners broke it out into its own restaurant franchise.  It seems as if NYC demanded that this burger deserved it’s own place!
